FAQ

1. Can topinate ointment be used for a long time?
Ans: No, you should not use topinate ointment for a long time. The doctor generally prescribes it for two consecutive weeks only. However, the treatment can be more prolonged for chronic (long-term) inflammatory conditions. Consult your physician before using this medication.
2. Does topinate ointment cause severe skin reactions?
Ans: Severe skin reactions are quite rare with topinate ointment. However, skin reactions can occur in a person who is hypersensitive to topinate ointment. It is essential to leave the affected area open after applying topinate ointment as using occlusive dressings (air- and water-tight dressing) can lead to skin reactions. The medicine may not itself cause a reaction, but the added excipients with the medications can lead to a reaction in some cases. Inform your doctor immediately in case you encounter any skin reactions. 3. Can topinate ointment be used on the face?
Ans: No, you should not use topinate ointment on the face. In addition to this, topinate ointment should also not be used on the axillae (armpits), groin, and if there is atrophy (wasting away of tissues) at the treatment site. In certain circumstances, it can be exceptionally considered to be used by doctors. You should use it only after consultation with your physician, and if possible, the application on the face should be limited to a maximum of 5 days.
4. Can topinate ointment be applied to children?
Ans: Topinate ointment is not recommended for use in children less than one year of age. It is also not recommended for use in older children and adolescents as the side effects are more common. There is an increased risk of suppression of the immune system in the pediatric population, which may make the child prone to other diseases and atrophic changes; hence, it is not recommended. Still, the doctor may recommend this medicine in rare cases, but the treatment is usually limited to 5 days, and the therapy is reviewed weekly.
5. Can we use topinate ointment in infections?
Ans: Topinate ointment is not an antimicrobial or antifungal agent. It is a steroid medication. It should not be used in infections as a corticosteroid; it suppresses the immune system and increases the risk of infections. Bacterial infections are prone to worsen if the infection is covered with a dressing after using topinate ointment. If the inflammatory lesions get infected, or there is any spread of infection, consult your doctor immediately. The doctor will withdraw the use of topinate ointment and provide appropriate antimicrobial therapy.
