FAQ

1. What happens if I stop taking levothyroxine tablet?
Ans: Do not stop the medication suddenly without informing your doctor even if you feel better because stopping this medication may flare up your symptoms again, such as fatigue, weight gain, difficulty tolerating cold, dry skin and thinning hair. Even changing the brand of the drug may affect the amount of medicine absorbed and change your thyroid hormone levels. For best results, levothyroxine should be taken regularly at the same dose of the same brand at all times.
2. How long after taking the levothyroxine tablet can I drink milk?
Ans: Drinking milk or eating other calcium-rich foods less than 4 hours before or after taking levothyroxine can reduce the absorption of the drug, lowering its efficacy so, it is recommended to avoid drinking milk or eating calcium-rich foods at least 4 hours after taking levothyroxine tablet. Generally, patients are advised to take levothyroxine on an empty stomach and not eat for at least 30-60 minutes after taking it.
3. Can I take thyroid supplements with levothyroxine tablet?
Ans: Taking any other medication or supplement with levothyroxine may cause you to need a higher or lower dose of levothyroxine because supplements like calcium or iron may affect the absorption of levothyroxine, and also many drugs can change the absorption, breakdown or response to levothyroxine. That could mean you get too much effect or too little. Inform your doctor if you are taking any new drug or supplement.
4. What are the side effects caused by levothyroxine tablet?
Ans: Levothyroxine tablet may cause side effects such as palpitations, vomiting, anxiety, diarrhoea, weight loss, nervousness and restlessness at higher doses. Although, these effects may disappear when you are taking the correct dose. Inform your doctor if these side effects bother or worsen your condition or persist for a longer duration.
